The Different Types of Humidification Systems
One of the most important elements of humidors is the humidification system. A certain level of relative humidity will need to be maintained inside of your humidors in order to keep your cigars in optimal condition. Because a humidor’s humidification system is a critical element in protecting your cigars, it will be important for you to select a high quality humidifier. In general, you will have three different options to choose from.
The first option, passive humidifiers, is the ones most commonly used in humidors. They release stored humidity through diffusion and evaporation. These systems employ the use of distilled water or a 50/50 solution of distilled water and propylene glycol to provide a buffer effect on air humidity. There is some anecdotal evidence that this type of humidification system also possesses antibacterial and antifungal properties.
Your second option for humidification systems in humidors will be electronic humidifiers. With this type of humidification system, a sensor measures the level of humidity in a humidor and then activates a ventilator. Once the preset humidity level has been achieved, the ventilator stops blowing. In general, electronic humidifiers are considered to be the accurate type of humidification system for humidors.
Finally, you will have the option of employing the use of silica gel beads for your humidors. This type of humidification system also has a buffer effect on relative humidity, and the beads are moistened with distilled water as needed. These beads are generally calibrated in various ranges of humidity, and they can absorb and release humidity as needed.
When it comes to choosing a humidification system for your humidors, there is no right or wrong option. In order to ensure that you make the right selection, you are encouraged to seek advice from fellow cigar experts or from your local tobacconist shop. The right humidification system should provide you with many years of use.
