The Different Types of Cigar Cutters

In its construction, it closely resembles the guillotine cutter, but its blade is fashioned to cut a wedge into the cap of a stogie, rather than removing it altogether. The cutting blade slices the cigar from side to side, at the same depth, so you do not have to worry about accidentally cutting the cap of your cigar too deeply.

The third option that you will have to choose from is the hole punch. As the name indicates, the hole punch is designed to punch a small hole in the cap of the cigar, rather than removing it. The advantage to punching a hole in the cap of the cigar is that it allows you to direct the flavor of the cigar to the appropriate place on your palette. The downside to using a hole punch is that, when the cigar is being smoked, tar can gather near the hole.

There is a fourth option when it comes to cigar cutters, the Shuriken cutter. This cigar cutter was not introduced to the market until 2011, so it is a fairly recent innovation. Its construction resembles an oversized capsule, and the interior features six, very sharp blades that punch slits inside of the top of the cigar. Many cigar enthusiasts are still withholding judgment on their opinion of this type of cigar cutter.

As aforementioned, the type of cigar cutter that you choose will be dependent upon a number of different factors. You are encouraged to experiment with different types of cutters to see which option you like the best. There is no right or wrong method to cutting a cigar with any of these options. However, it is important to remember that most cigar experts recommend that you use a straight cutter on small ring gauge cigars, due to their smaller construction.
